Fire Cider: A Kick-Ass Herbal Remedy To Keep You Healthy
Yes, yes indeed… Fire Cider is one kick-ass herbal remedy. It kicks your ass in it’s lively, hot, sweet and pungent taste… and in helping you stay healthy in the winter time. Plus, it brings a nice warmth to your body!
“Fire cider is a folk recipe said to have immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-viral properties.”
So what’s in it?
Fire cider consists of onion, garlic, ginger root, horseradish root, cayenne powder, apple cider vinegar, and honey! 💥
Onions
Onions contain sulfur compounds that help fight mucus and promote the removal of the mucus from your airways. They are considered to be the most powerful natural antibiotic. Which can fight off both viral and bacterial infections (by stimulating the immune system via a phytochemical called quercetin)! Onions contain a good amount of prebiotics, which helps to promote gut health for optimal immune function.
Garlic
One amazing and versatile herb! It is useful for everything- from enhancing the flavor of our foods, to being claimed as one of the greatest medicinal plants. Garlic stimulates the production of white blood cells, which boosts our body’s immune function. It makes a wonderful internal and external antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial agent, which is effective for treating so many different types of infections! Garlic is great at improving circulation and helping with many circulatory issues. The list goes on for treating colds, flus, sore throats, and poor or sluggish digestion!
Ginger-root
Ginger helps improved circulation and reduce inflammation. It’s a warming, decongesting herb used to help with colds and flus, respiratory congestion and sore throats. Research suggests ginger can prevent viruses from sticking to the lining of the respiratory tract, stopping viral infections before they spread and cause symptoms. Ginger’s antiseptic properties make it very effective for helping gastrointestinal infections and nausea.
Horseradish Root
Horseradish adds heat, helping to warm us up from the inside out (something I LOVE), and it also supports our body’s ability to fight off bacteria. It is known for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. It’s a root that definitely strengthens our immune system and fights off bacteria… including that from urinary tract infections and sinus infections.
Cayenne Powder
Cayenne encourages blood flow to our extremities, which helps to reduce fevers (and warms my fingers and toes!). It’s an amazing pain reliever from those aches and pains associated with the flu or a fever.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar helps kill bacteria and viruses and is also a fantastic natural preservative.
Honey
Honey has plenty of health and healing properties too, but the main ones include, soothing coughs and sore throats. It also acts as a natural preservative and adds a yummy flavor to the mix.
The history of Fire Cider
It is said that fire cider has been around since the time of the plague. Grave robbers and thieves would drink it to protect themselves from getting the deadly and highly contagious diseases. 🤷♀️
The amazing and famous herbalist, Rosemary Gladstar really popularized it in the 80s. Now people all over, sell the famous fire cider… but it is so easy to make your own. Check out Ms. Gladstar’s video… I just LOVE her so much.
Rosmery’s Recipe

Fire Cider
Ingredients
- 1 Onion, chopped roughly 1/2 cup
- 4-5 cloves Garlic, coarsely chopped
- 3-4 Tbs Freshly grated ginger root
- 3-4 Tbs Freshly grated horseradish root
- 2 cups Raw unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp Cayenne powder
- 1/3 cup Raw local honey more or less depending preference (or even eliminate)
Instructions
- Grad or chop everything. Then mix onions, garlic, ginger root, and horseradish root in a quart jar.
- Add about 2 cups of warm raw apple cider vinegar to cover. (Warming the vinegar allows it to more actively draw the properties out of the herbs.)
- Cover with lid and shake well. Let the mixture sit at room temperature (near a sunny window) for 3 to 4 weeks.
- Strain and discard the spent herbs after a few weeks. Now add the honey and the cayenne pepper (~1/3 cup of honey and ~1 tsp cayenne powder- more or less depending on your preference!)
- Refrigerate and use within a month- though it can last a few months when refrigerated.
Notes
- Take 1-2 Tablespoons (or 1 oz) of the first sign of a cold and repeat every 3-4 hours until symptoms subside.
- You can also drink 1 oz a day to keep colds and the flu at bay and to keep you warm.
- as a salad dressing or marinade
- mixed in a soup
- or add warm water to it and make it a tea
What about you?
Would you try it? If you would, don’t forget to make it at the end of summer, so it will be ready for Autumn and Wintertime (remember it has to sit for 4 weeks before you can use it!). Then replenish your stash after 1 week, to make sure you have it ready for the following month. Keep at it to get you through the winter!
