How To Make A Simple Natural Cough Syrup
Are you tired of the wintertime run around of runny noses, coughs, sore throats, and the flu. Plus, all the medicine you’re given or all the money you’ve spent on more natural versions or herbal remedies?
I am! So that’s why I’ve been venturing into making my own natural remedies. Especially with my little kiddos. They are SO easy to make and a lot cheaper than store-bought brands.
Yes, sometimes I too want a quick fix and will go for a more natural variation of medications (such as Genexa and Little Remedies products). But, it is nice to feel like you have control over your health. Like you can do something in a preventative way to build up your families bodies, to help fight colds and infections with God’s creations. So this leads me to one of the most basic, but effective health recipies… the honey-onion cold and cough syrup!
Honey-Onion Syrup
This simple natural cough syrup is a very easy and wonderful recipe you can use for coughs, colds and sore throats. It’s an old recipe… people used to make and let it sit on the back of their woodstoves. It’s said that as they walked by, they would scoop a spoonful into their mouths… which kept their immune systems strong throughout the winter. Then they would rarely get sick. I’m sure there were other things they did as well… but non the less- I have found, by personal use, that this honey-onion syrup really does knock out a cough quicker. It does so by healing and restoring the body… not just by covering up the symptoms as many over-the-counter medicines do.
Health Benefits of Honey and Onions
Onions contain sulfur compounds that help fight mucus and promote the removal of the mucus from your airways. Onions are considered to be the most powerful natural antibiotics, which can fight off both viral and bacterial infections, and ease the symptoms of sore throat!
Honey has plenty of health and healing properties, but the main ones include soothing coughs and sore throats. Plus, it makes your syrup taste nice and sweet. Honey also acts as a natural preservative to keep your syrup lasting longer.

How long will this syrup last in the fridge?
Great question! I have kept it in the fridge for an entire season and it is still fine. I would say about 6 or so months refrigerated. Just use clean spoons when you dip into it and close the lid tight. 😉
